Summer 2010 and Fall 2010
Special Events Coordinator Assistant

Project description: The selected intern will be introduced to the area of special event coordination in the museum. The intern will develop and use skills in customer relations, leadership, communication, and technical writing.
The intern will assist with the day-to-day operation of the Special Events Office including maintaining the calendar of events, meeting with current and prospective clients; assisting with planning the Fall 2010 Bridal Expo; managing budget spreadsheets; and overseeing and coordinating the new lunch tour series for The Real George Washington exhibit.
Work Schedule: The intern must be able to volunteer a total of 120-150 hours during the course of the internship. Weekly schedule is negotiable; however, the intern should be able to work at least 4 hours per day.
Qualifications: Candidates from all backgrounds with a demonstrated interest in museum work and event management are encouraged to apply. Computer skills are essential. Accuracy and strong attention to detail are crucial. The applicant must have at least a 2.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale and have completed first year of college before beginning internship.
Discovery Room Intern

Project description: The selected intern will be introduced to the area of museum interpretation and education and will gain an understanding of how to present tour information to school groups and self-guided visitors. The intern will develop and use skills in public speaking, classroom management, and museum interpretation.
The intern will help manage the Colonial North Carolina Discovery Room, which complements the Mount Vernon traveling exhibit, The Real George Washington. Tasks include setting up the classroom with colonial-era touch items and leading short workshops for school groups during the week and self-guided visitors on the weekend. As time allows, the intern will assist the Education Section staff in implementing other museum programs and events, including the Colonial Family Day on Saturday, September 25th.
Work Schedule: The intern must be able to volunteer a total of at least 100 hours during the course of the internship. Weekly schedule is negotiable. Some weekend work required. This position is available in summer and fall.
Qualifications: Candidates from all backgrounds with a demonstrated interest in museum work and North Carolina history are encouraged to apply. Intern must be comfortable speaking in public and using classroom management techniques. The applicant must have at least a 2.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale and have completed first year of college before beginning internship.
Library Collection Digitization Project

Project description: The intern will complete a project-based internship. The intern will complete the digitization of the library card catalog. In addition, this intern will assist with educational programs and write articles for the Old North State Volunteer Newsletter.
Work Schedule: The intern must be able to volunteer a total of at least 100 hours during the course of the internship. Weekly schedule is negotiable. This position is for the fall semester only.
Qualifications: Candidates interested in library science, history, and public history are encouraged to apply. The applicant must have at least a 2.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale and have completed first year of college before beginning internship.
Education and Marketing Intern

Project description: The intern will complete a project-based internship. The intern will assist with the marketing of the Mount Vernon traveling exhibit, The Real George Washington. Tasks include sending press releases, contacting schools, and preparing previsit materials for tour groups. In addition, the intern will assist the Education Section staff in implementing museum programs and giving interactive tours to visitors using hands-on gallery carts.
Work Schedule: The intern must be able to volunteer a total of at least 100 hours during the course of the internship. Weekly schedule is negotiable. This position is for the fall only.
Qualifications: Candidates interested in marketing, history, and public history are encouraged to apply. The applicant must have at least a 2.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale and have completed first year of college before beginning internship.
