The North Carolina Museum of History, located in downtown Raleigh, provides internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students looking for experience in museums.
Spring 2010 Internship
Special Events Coordinator Assistant
Project goals: The selected intern will be introduced to the area of special event coordination in the museum and will gain an understanding of how to plan a public event using various vendors. The intern will develop and use skills in marketing, communication, and technical writing.
The intern will coordinate the 2nd Annual NC Museum of History Bridal Expo. Project tasks include composing letters to vendors, coordinating a fashion show, and developing a floor plan. As time allows, the intern will assist with the Special Events Coordinator in implementing other museum special events during the semester.
Work Schedule: The intern must be able to volunteer a total of 100-120 hours during the course of the internship. Weekly schedule is negotiable.
Qualifications: Candidates from all backgrounds with a demonstrated interest in museum work and event management are encouraged to apply. Computer skills are essential. Accuracy and strong attention to detail are crucial. The applicant must have at least a 2.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale and have completed first year of college before beginning internship.

Internship Program at the North Carolina Museum of History
1. The Internal Branch of the Education Section at the North Carolina Museum of History offers two types of internships:
- The general museum internship is designed for undergraduate students and students exploring their interests in public history. Students will be introduced to the field of museum education and the role of the Education staff. The intern will gain experience in museum education by developing and implementing on-site programs; researching objects in the museum collection; writing articles for the volunteer newsletter; and conducting educational programs and tours.
- The project-based internship is for graduate students and students with previous public history experience. The intern will gain experience in museum education by writing articles for the volunteer newsletter or other museum publications; researching, developing, and implementing educational programs; and answering research requests from staff and museum visitors.
Timetable:
Spring Semester
Last day students may submit intern request forms: November 1
*Staff determines number of interns to accept and sets up interviews: November 15
Staff selects candidate and sends acceptance letter: Before Thanksgiving break
Student begins internship: January
Summer Semester
Last day students may submit intern request forms: March 1
*Staff determines number of interns to accept and sets up interviews: March 15
Staff selects candidate and sends acceptance letter: 2-3 weeks after interview
Student begins internship: May
Fall Semester
Last day students may submit intern request forms: June 1
*Staff determines number of interns to accept and sets up interviews: June 15
Staff selects candidate and sends acceptance letter: 2-3 weeks after interview
Student begins internship: August/September
