We bring history to you! The North Carolina Museum of History is pleased to offer this exciting set of educational resources. All of our materials are geared to meet curriculum goals and to be both fun and interactive for teachers and students. We strive to keep these resources as low cost as possible, and many are free to North Carolina classrooms.

Annual Teacher Institute

The Museum of History offers an annual one-week professional development workshop for educators on an interesting and interactive topic. The schedule always includes field trips and guest speakers, and teachers leave with classroom-ready materials and activities. The workshop provides up to four CEU credits (40 contact hours).

Through the Eyes of Explorers
July 23 to July 27, 2007

Who ventured into the uncharted land that was to become North Carolina? Follow the journeys of early Indian and European explorers. Using history, geography, science, and art, travel early North Carolina employing primary sources such as John White’s drawings and John Lawson’s records. Educational Media Center

We offer an outstanding collection of classroom materials through our media center. Order video programs or History-in-a-Box kits and then simply drop them back into the mail, or purchase an Educator Notebook to use every year. All resources provide classroom activities geared to meet the Standard Course of Study. We keep these programs very affordable, and many are free!

Online Teacher Workshops

Go online for these interactive workshops on a variety of interesting topics, geared for educators to earn continuing education credits at home or anywhere with Web access. Available to public, private and home school educators, these professional development courses will boost your own knowledge and help you to prepare classroom activities. Workshops provide up to four CEU credits (40 contact hours) but may be tailored to the number of contact hours needed by the registrant, including regular, reading, and technology credits. These are a real bargain at $35 per class.

Tar Heel Junior Historian Association Clubs

We invite you to form a club if you

  • are affiliated with a public or private school or library
  • operate a home school
  • lead a youth group such as Boy or Girl Scouts or 4-H

Your club will receive free copies of Tar Heel Junior Historian magazine and have the opportunity to take part in the THJHA annual convention and compete in statewide contests. Award-winning student projects are displayed in the museum for one year. As the group's adviser, you will receive a handbook, a teaching supplement accompanying each issue of the magazine, and a newsletter to keep you in the know. Take advantage of this free program!

Tar Heel Junior Historian Magazine

The Museum of History publishes this fun and fact-filled magazine twice annually on topics of North Carolina history and culture. Interesting articles and photographs illustrate important themes. Subscriptions are free to Tar Heel Junior Historian Association clubs. Library and private individual subscriptions are available for $8 per year. Back issues are available for $2 each.

Virtual Field Trips

"Visit" the museum through the newest cutting-edge technology! Via live two-way videoconferencing, your class can take a Virtual Field Trip to the Museum of History. These interesting and interactive programs help students experience history firsthand. Your students will see, hear, and interact with an expert at the museum. All our programs give students the chance to see and touch artifacts. Pre- and post-program classroom activities are provided.

Interesting topics are available to both elementary and high school audiences. These programs are free to North Carolina educational sites in our network. They are also available out of network and to any site with videoconferencing facilities.

Streaming Programs

We are pleased to now offer the several programs in an on-demand streaming video format for viewing at your convinience. The programs also include downloadable program materials that include activities and aid in exploring these topics in more depth. Registration is required for viewing these free programs.
