The one-quart metal canteen used by American soldiers in World War I remained essentially unchanged throughout World War II and the Korean War. The canteen cover, which attaches to the waist belt, insulates liquids. The canteen slides snugly into a cup inside the cover. The cup holds both hot and cold liquids and can be placed over a fire. By the time of the Vietnam War, plastic canteens had begun to replace metal ones.
