May 3, 2005 - July 10, 2006
In October 2003 the Thirtieth Heavy Separate Brigade of the North Carolina National Guard was activated for deployment to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Like other North Carolina Guard units today, the brigade traces its lineage to World War I and the formation of the Thirtieth Infantry Division in 1917. The activation of the brigade's approximately five thousand members represents the largest mobilization of the state Guard since World War II.
A Call to Arms examines the history of the Thirtieth Division in World Wars I and II and the Thirtieth Heavy Separate Brigade in the Iraq War. During World War I, Fred Olds, administrator of the Hall of History (now the North Carolina Museum of History), appealed to the division to secure artifacts for the museum's collection. In 2004 Elizabeth F. Buford, director of the Museum of History, made a similar request of the brigade. A Call to Arms contains many of the objects collected in Iraq.
