Facing the Grim Reaper, 1864

In the spring of 1864, Tar Heel soldiers in the Confederate army expressed hope and determination to win the war. But severe losses in heavy fighting throughout the year slowly wore down the army. By year's end, with thousands of men dead, wounded, and in Federal prisons, few survived to continue the fight.
