The museum's collection of furnishings documents the lifestyles of North Carolinians over the past three centuries and includes household furniture, silver, ceramics, and other decorative and utilitarian objects.
Highlights of the collection include
- Furniture from the late 1600s to the present, including preindustrial furniture and selected pieces of furniture manufactured by North Carolina furniture companies
- Furniture made by Thomas Day, a free African American cabinetmaker who lived and worked in pre–Civil War North Carolina
- Silver services and flatware by 48 of the 306 silversmiths who worked in the state during the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries
- Ceramics, prints, paintings, and other decorative arts
- Food-processing and food-service equipment
- Housekeeping, lighting, and heating and cooling devices
- Dolls, toys, and other objects commonly found in North Carolina homes
