Home / Artifacts / Search the Collections

Use the search box below to find artifacts in the North Carolina Museum of History's collections.

To perform a search:

For a simple search, enter a one-word query. For example, to search for quilts, enter quilt. Searches are not case sensitive; QUILT will yield the same results as quilt.

To search for a phrase or sequence of words, type all words in the search bar. For example, to search for quilt patterns, enter quilt pattern. Please note, search results may differ depending upon whether the words used are plural or singular. For example, quilt pattern will bring more results than quilt patterns. Use the singular version to maximize results. Word order is irrelevant unless you are looking for an exact phrase.

To look for a precise phrase, put the exact phrase in quotes. For example, to find crazy quilts, type "crazy quilt."

To narrow your search:

Use the word not to exclude records from your search. For example, to search for all quilts except crazy quilts, enter quilt not crazy.

All searches are performed on the following thirteen database fields:

  • Artifact Description
  • Accession Number
  • Artifact Class
  • Associations
  • Date Made
  • Dimensions
  • Materials
  • Object Name
  • Place Made
  • Place Used
  • Expanded Descriptions
  • Historical Significance
  • Use History

Searches will return all records that contain the search word(s) or phrase within one or more of the thirteen fields.
