History and Highballs: Beer—A Story About Power

Thursday, March 28, 2024, 7 p.m., via Zoom (See Below)

Speaker: Atinuke “Tinu” Diver, award-winning documentarian, lawyer, and nonprofit leader

During this session of History and Highballs, Tinu Diver will discuss her unique experiences researching, collecting, and documenting beer and brewing history, as well as why who tells those stories still matters. The practice of brewing is as old as human civilization. Traditionally, women dominated brewing in parts of the world now referred to as Africa and the East, but looking at the modern brewing and craft beer industry in the United States, you would never know. A white, male-centric orientation to beer history in the United States and the American South is an incomplete history.

Atinuke “Tinu” Diver is an award-winning documentarian, lawyer, and nonprofit leader based in Raleigh. Her documentary short Quilt Journeys premiered at the 2019 Blackstar Film Festival and was shown at Longleaf Film Festival, Alice Fest, Carrboro Film Festival, Hayti Heritage Film Festival, River Run Film Festival, and BEYOND: The Cary Film Festival. Her other documentary projects include: Masterpiece, 98, and A Black Woman Made This Beer, which received Best National/International Reporting from The North American Guild of Beer Writers in 2022. Her current project, This Belongs to Us, was selected for the Working Films Works-in-Progress Lab and the 2021 Sundance Film Festival Carolina Works-In-Progress. It has received funding from the Southern Documentary Fund, Filmed in NC Fund, and the Brewers’ Association. Diver earned a BA and JD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a certificate in Documentary Arts from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.
