2009 Annual Convention Scenes

Chapter of the Year

The purpose of the Tar Heel Junior Historian Association is to encourage the study of local and state history and to help young people better understand and appreciate their places in history. This year’s Chapter of the Year award goes to a club that took this purpose to heart and made the study of local and family history its focus for the 2008–2009 school year. Each month the students explored a different topic related to Stanly County history, including gold mining, the Great Depression, and holiday traditions. The club visited the North Carolina Museum of History and participated in a Hands-On Heritage Discovery Tour. In addition to all of these activities, club members managed to enter eighteen projects in this year’s THJHA Annual Contests. The 2009 Tar Heel Junior Historian Association Chapter of the Year is the Aquadale Explorers from Aquadale Elementary School in Norwood, David Wagoner, adviser.
