Summer Camp Registration Begins at Museum

Sign up for summer camp at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh and have a blast in the past. The camps are so popular that the museum has added three new topics and more sessions. Whether a camp centers on pirates in the 1700s, children in the 1890s or life during World War II, the focus is on fun. Participants can dress up like Blackbeard, learn a Scottish dance, play a Cherokee game, make an apple tart and engage in other hands-on learning experiences.

Suited for students from kindergarten through eighth grade, the history camps are taught by professional educators on staff or experienced teachers in the community. Enrollment is limited to 12 participants per camp.

Each camp is $80 per person and $65 for Museum of History Associates. Lunchtime care from noon to 1 p.m. is available for $15 per person. (Participants should bring a bag lunch.) Registration begins Friday, Feb. 15, for members of the Museum of History Associates and Monday, March 3, for the general public. Need-based scholarships are available.

On the Home Front FULL

What was it like to live during World War II? Listen to wartime and swing music; taste Victory cooking; find out what soldiers wore, ate and carried; write a V-mail letter; and shop with ration cards and red points.

Colonial North Carolina FULL

Get a taste of what life was like on the eve of the American Revolution. Listen to stories, play period games, learn a trade and look at period clothing.

Pirates, Ships, and Lighthouses

Set sail for adventure on the coast! Learn about fierce pirates like Blackbeard and Anne Bonney, build a lighthouse, wear pirate’s clothing, taste sea rations and listen to seafaring stories.

Explore how transportation has changed in North Carolina over the years. Travel by foot, animal, boat, train, motorcar and spaceship. End your journey with a field trip to the train station!

The Blue and the Gray FULL

Examine how the Civil War affected life in North Carolina. Debate the issues that carried the state into the war; learn about the daily life of soldiers and the hardships of families at home; and uncover stories of the state’s outlaws and heroes.

History Training Shop

Go behind the scenes at the museum. Learn how to present a Gallery Cart and help plan and carry out a public program. You’ll earn a certificate as a junior volunteer for the upcoming year!

American Indian Life FULL

More American Indians live in North Carolina than in any state east of the Mississippi. Find out about past and present tribes, make a coil pot, design your own beadwork pattern, and listen to stories from our state’s first people.
