October Programs at the N.C. Museum of History

For many people, fall weather brings a renewed sense of energy. October programs at the N.C. Museum of History provide many reasons to get out and enjoy the season. The month’s programs range from the classic 1958 pirate movie to a Music of the Carolinas performance with award-winning string-band musicians.

On Oct. 17 middle- and high-school students can let their voices be heard! After a special forum co-sponsored by Kids Voting North Carolina Wake County, students can talk about current issues with representatives from all 12 Wake County municipalities.

There’s all this and more this fall. All October programs are free. Parking is free on weekends.

Programs

History Corner: An Apple a Day
Thursday, Oct. 1
10-11 a.m.
Ages 5-9 with adult

October is National Apple Month. Celebrate this fresh, healthy, tasty mountain treat with a lesson, a story and a taste test! The program is presented with Cameron Village Regional Library.

First Friday at the Movies: “The Pirate of the Black Hawk”Friday, Oct. 2
7-9 p.m.

In this 1958 action-packed adventure, a dashing pirate and his loyal crew agree to rescue a duke’s daughter from evil pirates and restore her brother to his rightful throne. Free popcorn and beverages!

Time for Tots: Down in the Pumpkin Patch

October means pumpkins! Find out about the different varieties and uses of pumpkins and gourds. Then decorate your own tiny pumpkin to take home.

Exhibit Opening: A New Land, “A New Voyage”: John Lawson’s Exploration of Carolina
Friday, Oct. 9

View artifacts, specimens, illustrations, and other objects related to Lawson’s travels in the Carolina colony.

Music of the Carolinas: Music From the North Carolina Piedmont
Sunday, Oct. 11
3-4 p.m.

The 2009-2010 series kicks off with a concert featuring N.C. Folk Heritage Award winners and other Piedmont musicians in conjunction with the release of the CD Anthology of String Band Music From the North Carolina Piedmont. PineCone and the N.C. Arts Council Folklife Program co-sponsor the performance.

History à la Carte: Early Explorations
Wednesday, Oct. 14

Peter White, Director, N.C. Botanical Garden

Hear about the botanical treasures of our state and the natural history accounts of early explorers in North Carolina, including John Lawson, William Bartram, Thomas Harriot and John White.

Government Matters!
Saturday, Oct. 17
1-3 p.m.

What does a mayor do? How does the city council affect you? Representatives from local governments across Wake County will discuss these and other issues in the 2009 Education Forum for middle- and high-school students. Make It, Take It: Make Your Own Fun

Make a Depression-era craft and look at photos of life in 1930s North Carolina in the exhibit In Search of a New Deal.
