North Carolina Museum of History

North Carolina at Home and in Battle in World War II

Teacher Resources

Activities

The first two activities originated in an activity packet that students can use while/after they visit the museum's Pioneers of Aviation exhibit. The third appeared in the WWII issue of Tar Heel Junior Historian. All are appropriate for 4th through 8th grade students. Adobe Acrobat is required to open the files (a free download is available).

Break the Code, a one-page code-breaking activity that reveals information about the Women's Air Force Service Pilots
Tuskegee Airmen Word Find, a one-page puzzle that includes a bit of background info
A World at War: Where Am I?, a map activity in which students match information to cities around the world

These lessons originated in the museum's Everybody's War: North Carolina and WWII History-in-a-Box kit, available to North Carolina teachers to borrow.* Dr. Timothy Callicutt, currently a social studies teacher in the Guilford County Schools system, created the lessons. Adobe Acrobat is required to open some of the handouts within the lessons.
