Project History

The North Carolina Museum of History Division promotes the understanding of the history and material culture of North Carolina for the educational benefit of North Carolinians. Through collections and historical interpretation, its museums encourage citizens and visitors to explore and understand the past; to reflect on their own lives and their place in history; and to preserve state, regional, and local history for future generations.

When the museum opened in its new building in 1994, one of the premier exhibits featured the history of women in North Carolina. This popular exhibit was the result of many years of diligent research, design, and preparation. Although the exhibit has closed, we still have a wealth of information about North Carolina women’s history including letters, journals, photographs, artifacts, and other resources.

In 1998, education staff at the North Carolina Museum of History decided to put these resources to good use by offering a teacher workshop on women’s history. At the same time, the museum was looking for ways to serve educators who could not travel to Raleigh for "live" programs. The result is this workshop, which allows educators like yourself to participate in professional development without having to leave their home or school. This kind of workshop will not replace traditional programs but will supplement the museum’s ongoing programs for both students and educators.

Since developing this workshop, the museum has created six more: Stories from the Civil War; American Indians in North Carolina, Past and Present; Legends of North Carolina;  North Carolina at Home and in Battle in World War II; North Carolina Geography; and The Civil Rights Movement in North Carolina. All workshops are offered annually, with a new one created each year. Based on evaluations from this project, the museum will develop future programs for educators using this Web-based technology.
