AACC Celebration Education Day 2025

We hope you and your students enjoy these virtual programs and performances.

Registration is limited for all sessions, except for Storytelling and Music Performances. Presentations will be recorded and available as videos on demand as well. Please note: Registration links for Presentations CANNOT be shared. The presentations may be projected for classroom or other group viewing. All presentations and performances are free to attend. All sessions are subject to change.

Presenters

A fourth-generation basket weaver, Alfreda Johnson grew up in South Carolina where her family made and sold sweetgrass baskets at a roadside stand that still exists. For more than 30 years, Ms. Johnson has lived in Charlotte where she exhibits her award-winning work at juried festivals.

Sandra Headen has a PhD in Social and Community Psychology, and was a longtime faculty member at The School of Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Now she’s a full-time author of books for middle grade readers, including Warrior on the Mound. Her work weaves together events from the past with strong characters and strong aspirations. 

Khadija McNair is the Manager of Freedom Park and is part of the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission. Freedom Park is a tribute to the unyielding spirit of the African American struggle for freedom, and speaks to the universal ideals of liberty, resilience, and equality.

Jordyn Jones is a filmmaker, historian, and educator. He will share the life and legacy of Peter Oliver, an enslaved man who lived in the Moravian community of Salem. 

Storytelling and Music LIVE!

Enjoy storytelling by members of the North Carolina Association of Black Storytellers as well as engaging music performances in this LIVE! streaming event held in conjunction with the annual African American Cultural Celebration Education Day. Watch any or all of these amazing sessions, which will begin about every 45 minutes starting at 9:30 a.m. The last session begins at 1:15 p.m. Auto-captioning will be available for these performances.
