Honor Juneteenth at the NC Museum of History. Celebrate hope and freedom, bring friends and family to the museum to reflect on the past and look to the future, and participate in our various Juneteenth programs. The museum will host Stedman Graham as the keynote speaker for the screening of George H. White: Searching for Freedom.

Celebrate Juneteenth at the NC Museum of History by honoring the career of George H. White, one of the most significant African American leaders of the Reconstruction era. From humble beginnings in eastern North Carolina, White ascended through the ranks of state politics to serve in the United States Congress as its sole Black voice little more than two decades after Emancipation. George H. White: Searching for Freedom, a 30-minute film produced by PBS North Carolina, charts White’s remarkable career as an educator, lawyer, politician, and civil rights pioneer during the rise of racist Jim Crow laws in North Carolina and his establishment of an all-Black community in Whitesboro, New Jersey.

Enjoy an evening of music at the North Carolina Museum of History immersed in the vibrant melodies of the legendary Nnenna Freelon, Shana Tucker, Freddy Greene, and the Martin Luther King Jr. All Children’s Choir. Destiny Hemphill and Fred L. Joiner will share poetry, as well. This program is brought to you in partnership with the N.C. African American Heritage Commission and Come Hear NC and is free and open to the public.
