On March 21, 1916, Mount Mitchell became North Carolina’s first state park, as well as the first state park in the Southeast. This display celebrates a century of conservation, education and recreation by the North Carolina State Parks system, which comprises nearly a quarter million acres. Learn about the history of several state parks. Touch-screen monitors showcase many photographs by North Carolina State Park rangers. The display was produced by the North Carolina State Parks.
